ARE VEGANS BETTER ATHLETES?

A recent interview with several top sports nutritionists posted on the NY Times blog discusses vegan ultra running legend Scott Jurek and the question whether swithicn to a vegan diet would be a good idea for endurance athletes.

To read the entire article, visit,http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/20/can-athletes-perform-well-on-a-vegan-diet/, but to make a long story short, the answer is no.  There are obese vegans with unhealthy diets, just as there are obese omnivores with unhealthy diets.  The key is to try to cut out the junk and eat a balanced diet, whether or not it includes animal products. But as nutritionist and author Nancy Clark noted, “hard training trumps everything. Diet, if it’s healthy, isn’t going to make that much difference.”  There are no shortcuts around solid training to becoming a better runner.
